Useful Information

Venue

The DISC PhD School will be held in Cagliari in the beautiful location of the Cittadella dei Musei, in the room "Aula Rossa".
This area, on a hill overlooking the city, was first used by Phoenicians and Romans; during the Pisan period this area was just out of the city walls ("Castello") and here was located the old arsenal. From it one can enjoy one of the best view of the city, including the harbor, the ponds, the Poetto beach and a large part of the Gulf of the Angels. After a long restoration (1955-1970) sponsored by the University of Cagliari, the Cittadella dei Musei is now a museum and study complex that houses several Sardinia's heritage museums.

  • National Archeological Museum (Museo Archeologico Nazionale). Neolitic, early bronze Nuragic, Phoenician-Punic (with a reconstruction of the tophet of Tharros), medieval collections.
  • National Picture Gallery (Pinacoteca Nazionale). A vast array of XV and XVI century retablos from Catalan and Sardinian painters.
  • Collezione Clemente Susini. This collection of anatomical waxes consists of 23 models of parts of the human body made by Clemente Susini under commission by the viceroy Carlo Felice between 1801 and 1805.
  • Cardu Siamese Museum. The widest collection of Siamese art in Europe, collected by Stefano Cardu during his voyages late XIX and early XX century.

Travel

The English homepage of the airport of Cagliari can be found at http://www.sogaer.it/en.
If you click on "Flight Timetable" and then on "Seasonal flights" you can find the list of flights departing from and arriving in Cagliari. Please take care of the date in which the flight is operated ("Validity") and of the day of the week ("Freq" : 1=Monday, 2=Tuesday, etc.)
If you cannot find a convenient direct flight your best option is probably to fly to Milano or Rome (the Italian hubs) and take a flight to Cagliari from there. These are the main companies flying on these two routes:

- Meridiana,
- AirOne part of Star Alliance,
- Alitalia is also flying Rome-Cagliari,
- Ryanair.

The cost of a taxi from the airport to the hotels in the center of Cagliari is approximately 20 Euros.
Alternatively, you can take a bus from the airport to the station. Buses are quite frequent (every 15, 30 or 50 minutes depending on the hours). The last bus from the airport to the station leaves at 23.30 pm.
